Septic Alarm

What to do if my alarm goes off?

A septic alarm typically goes off to alert you of a problem with your septic system. The alarm is part of a monitoring system that is designed to signal when something is wrong.  When a septic alarm goes off, it's important to address the issue promptly to avoid system failure, backups, or costly repairs. Contacting a professional septic technician is usually recommended for proper diagnosis and repair. In the meantime, you may silence the alarm by pressing the silence button (usually located on the front or side of the panel). DO NOT TURN OFF THE BREAKER OR LINE OF SITE SWITCH TO THE PANEL.

J&A Contracting is prepared to respond quickly to any septic alarm.

Why did my septic alarm goes off?

Your septic system alarm can be triggered by various factors. While some causes may be simple adjustments or maintenance issues, an alarm could also signal a more serious problem. In either case, it's important to have your system assessed by a trusted professional to ensure it's functioning properly.

Common Causes of Septic Alarms

High Water Level

Failing Drainfield

High Water Level

The alarm is triggered when the liquid level in the septic tank rises too high, indicating a problem with the system, such as a blockage or slow draining.

Pump Failure

Failing Drainfield

High Water Level

If your septic system has a pump to move wastewater, a failure of the pump can cause the alarm to activate. This could be due to mechanical failure, a clog, or electrical issues.

Failing Drainfield

Failing Drainfield

Failing Drainfield

The drainfield may become clogged or saturated, preventing proper water absorption and causing a backup, which can trigger the alarm.

Power Failure

Electrical Issues

Failing Drainfield

A power outage can stop the pump from working, which may result in a high water level in the tank, activating the alarm.

Electrical Issues

Electrical Issues

Electrical Issues

Wiring or electrical problems, such as a short circuit, can cause the alarm to sound, particularly if the septic system is connected to a pump or other electrical components.

Improper Usage

Electrical Issues

Overloading the septic system with too much water or improper waste disposal (e.g., flushing non-biodegradable items) can cause the system to malfunction.
